With US index futures pointing to a lower open, we are seeing immediate caution in the market. This follows yesterday’s slide and reflects growing uncertainty ahead of key economic data later this week. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often called the market’s fear gauge, has risen to over 18, a significant jump from the calmer levels we saw in October 2025.
The main driver of this caution is the rapid shift in interest rate expectations. Just a week ago, a December rate cut from the Federal Reserve was seen as a 67% probability, but today that has fallen to below 50%. This repricing comes after the latest CPI report for October 2025 showed core inflation remaining stubborn at 3.6%, giving the Fed less room to ease policy.
